Remembering Inay

When I was back home in the Philippines I did not pay much attention to the celebration of Mother's Day.  Probably because its not as popular as Christmas or any other Filipino occassions but I remember greeting my Mom once or twice, but that was it, no special gift or whatsover which I truly regret now.  My concept of Mother's Day changed in July of 1994 when my Mom died three days before my birthday.

My Mom and I were very close, we were best friends probably because I am the eldest and the only girl in the family.  We had a strong bond which made it a lot harder to accept that she's already gone.

She was a strong, lively woman, someone who can make a room light up with her laughter.  But then she got sick, an illness that she thought was part of her menoupausal cycle.  It was too late when we found out that she had an advance stage of cervical cancer.  Through it all she kept her hopes and her faith but I didn't.  I was too weak and too scared that I am going to lose her that I was not there for her when she needed me the most.  Somehow I hated her for being sick, for leaving us.  She told me once that I am her source of strength but I found out that it was the other way around, she was my source of strenght!

I was able to put my life back on track because I know that what she wanted me to do and she was counting on me to be the one to hold our family together.  I did my best.  Now, I am a mother of two and the more I realize the hardships and sacrifices that my mother did for us and the more I love her for it but at the same time the more I long for her.  She will always be in my heart and on this Mother's Day I just want her to know that I love her so much and I never had the chance to say this to her - - - Inay you're the BEST MOM in the world!  Thank you for everything for being a good mother and for that making me one as well!
